Decontaminated soil from Fukushima delivered to PM's office

Decontaminated and low-level radioactive soil from Fukushima was moved to the Prime Minister’s Office in Tokyo for reuse on July 19.

The soil from the decontamination work at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant will be used in the front yard of the Prime Minister’s Office. A 60-centimeter-high layer of such soil will be covered with a 20-centimeter-high layer of regular soil.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, about 2 cubic meters of decontaminated soil was removed from the interim storage facility July 19.

The concentration of radioactive materials was 6,400 becquerels per kilogram, which is below the standard 8,000 becquerels level.

The transfer took about three days.

This is Japan's first official reuse of decontaminated soil from Fukushima.
