Runaway deer walks into Osaka police station

On March 24, a deer was spotted in Osaka.

Despite a crowd gathering around it, the deer appeared unfazed and continued walking toward the Sekime area in Joto Ward.

At one point,it even darted out onto a busy main road, causing tense moments for drivers.

While staff were guiding the deer, it suddenly ran off again.

Police and staff chased it but the deer was determined to head to its destination…a police station.

The deer walked into the Sekime Annex of the Osaka Prefectural Police building on its own.

On March 25, the deer was seen calmly grazing on grass inside the police grounds.

It is still unclear whether the deer came from Nara Prefecture, known for its large deer population in parks. However, the Nara Governor made one thing clear.

Yamashita Makoto, Nara Governor / We will ask that the deer captured in Osaka be released within Osaka Prefecture.

He added that Nara has no plans to accept the deer and that this has been communicated to Osaka officials.

The deer was later loaded into a vehicle and transported from the police facility. What will happen to the lost animal?

Yokoyama Hideyuki, Osaka City Mayor / I have been informed that the deer has been transferred to Osaka City’s animal management center. We want to ensure it can move to the next stage in a safe environment.
