11YO boy missing for 2 weeks in Kyoto as search intensifies

Police continued the search for a missing 11-year-old on April 6.

Adachi Yuki, an 11-year-old boy from the city of Nantan,  has been missing since his father dropped him off near his elementary school. April 6 marked two weeks since his disappearance.

Nantan resident / This is a notice from the city, like a community bulletin, asking anyone with information to come forward.

Residents received a missing person notice for Yuki in the city’s monthly newsletter. Along with his photo, the notice described what he was believed to be wearing that day -  a black-and-gray fleece and a sweatshirt with “84” on the front.

A briefing for parents was scheduled at his elementary school at 7PM on April 6. School officials confirmed Yuki was at school around 8:30AM on the day he went missing, but did not contact his parents until about three hours later.  It was only then that his disappearance came to light.

At the briefing, officials are believed to have explained the school’s response so far and outline measures to support students’ emotional well-being.

Where could he have gone?

So far, police have deployed around 640 officers to search across the city. More than 200 tips have been received, but none have led to a breakthrough.

One key search area is not where Yuki’s school backpack, the only clue so far, was found. These woods are about 9 kilometers south of the school where he was last seen.

On April 5, police conducted door-to-door inquiries. Residents said officers were already in the area the day after Yuki disappeared.

Resident / They asked me if I had seen the child.

Police reportedly returned several days later to ask the same questions again.

The search for Yuki is becoming increasingly urgent.  Police are continuing to urge the public to come forward with any information.
