Tokyo's Shibuya Ward to impose fine for littering starting June 1

On June 1, patrol staff of Tokyo's Shibuya Ward office began monitoring the area around Shibuya Station to look out for anyone littering.
According to the ward, the number of visitors has increased in recent years, leading to a rise in littering around the station.
Under the new system, Shibuya's patrol staff will monitor the ward’s streets around the clock and impose a 2,000 yen administrative fine when they catch someone littering.

In addition, convenience stores, coffee shops and other businesses in designated areas in the ward are now required to install trash cans.
Business operators who fail to do so will be fined 50,000 yen.
