Another murder case resulting from elderly-to-elderly care has occurred in Japan.

The incident occurred at this house in Machida, Tokyo; the staircase leading to the entrance has a handrail.

The two people living in this house were the 79-year-old suspect and his 100-year-old mother.

At around 2:00PM on November 25, emergency services received a call from the suspect.

Suspect (Re-enactment): I killed my mother. I’m exhausted from caring for her.

When the police arrived, the ambulance crew were treating the mother on the bed in the first-floor room, with the suspect standing nearby.

The mother was taken to hospital but was later confirmed dead.

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, the 79-year-old man is suspected of killing his mother on the afternoon of November 25 by covering her mouth and other means.

Neighbor: He's not the sort of person to do such a thing. He seemed quiet. You could hear conversations from the house when walking down the street. It wasn't shouting or arguing.

According to someone who lives nearby, the two have lived in this house for at least thirty years.

Neighbor: The mother has been bedridden for about 20 years. He has been looking after her ever since. About 10 to 15 years ago, I said to him, “It must be tough looking after your mother.” And he replied, “It certainly is.”

Neighbor: He often went shopping, carrying things with both hands. He'd carry things like adult diapers and such, so I thought he must be doing a lot of caregiving.

Neighbors observed the suspect almost daily going shopping. Also...

NTV Reporter: According to neighbors, staff from home care and bathing services frequently visited the residence.

It’s believed that the suspect utilized home care services for his mother’s care. However...

Suspect (Re-enactment): I was not in good health and felt worried about caring for my mother going forward.

The suspect is said to have made such statements.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police revealed that he has admitted to the allegations of murder.

According to the latest survey by Japan’s ministry of health, the proportion of elderly-to-elderly care has hit an all-time high at over 60%.
