July price hikes expand to over 2,500 food items
A new survey showed that price hikes in July will affect 2,566 food items, including bread and instant noodles, sold by 195 major food manufacturers.
According to Teikoku Databank, the increase is being driven by higher costs for raw materials and petroleum-based packaging materials, such as plastic trays and wrapping film.
The report says these costs have risen in part because of higher crude oil prices linked to the Middle East crisis.
It also forecasts that widespread price increases for beverages and other food products will continue throughout the summer.
Manufacturing company Gunze also announced price increases for plastic food-wrap film used to package vegetables and other food products. The new prices took effect for shipments beginning on June 22.
Price hikes are also scheduled for household essentials, including detergents and diapers.
The report says the trend is expected to spread beyond food products.
