Japan's births fall to record low for 10th straight year

The number of children born in 2025 fell to a record low in 2025, marking the 10th consecutive year of decline.

According to preliminary demographic statistics released on February 26 by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, 705,809 children were born in 2025. The figure dropped by approximately 15,000 from 2024, marking the 10th consecutive year of record lows.

The number of deaths stood at approximately 1.6 million, making it the first drop in five years.

Approximately 500,000 couples got married in 2025, marking an increase for the second consecutive year. Both marriage and birth rates were higher in major cities like Tokyo and Osaka.

The Health Ministry stated that it aims to increase the income of younger generations, and promote dual-income households as a countermeasure to the continuous decline in the birth rate.
