Bear cub spotted in Sapporo residential area, bear attack in Akita

This is a photo of a bear cub in a yard taken from inside a residence.

The bear was seen shortly before 7 a.m. on October 16 on the premises of a home in Sapporo, the capital of Japan’s northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido.

S/ Boy who witnessed bear / I shouted “bear” to let my mom know. The bear was there and then it climbed a tree and ate something like food.

After investigating traces such as fur left behind, authorities confirmed that the animal in the yard was indeed a bear.

Later in the day, in a residential area of Sapporo, the bear cub believed to be sighted in the morning was exterminated.

In the city of Akita, a resident filmed a bear from the second floor of a residence at about 5:30 a.m. on October 16.

The bear appeared to be eating something underneath trees on a street.

The previous night, a 64-year-old man walking his dog was attacked by a bear about 1 meter in length near Akita University’s Tegata Campus.

The man sustained injuries to his face and both arms.

Bear attacks against people have been occurring in various areas of Japan.

According to the Environment Ministry, seven people have died in bear attacks nationwide this fiscal year that began in April.

Officials said this is the worst since recordkeeping of these statistics began.
