Imperial family visits WWII Tokyo photo exhibit on 80th anniversary

On the evening of December 21, Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako and their daughter Princess Aiko visited a photo exhibition documenting Tokyo during World War II.

The photos were taken by photographer Ishikawa Koyo, who worked for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department before, during and after the war, and is known for wartime photos of the Japanese capital.

The exhibition commemorates the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

The three viewed photographs depicting the devastation caused by air raids on Tokyo.

The princess asked officials if the photos were taken immediately after the air raids, while the emperor and empress noted that the images have been well preserved and are valuable historical records.

They also heard explanations from Hasebe Ai, a weather forecaster and storyteller, and others about how weather forecasts were restricted as military secrets during the war.

Aiko asked if there were no weather forecasts from around the time of the Pearl Harbor attack.
