Trump's efforts to bring peace to Ukraine are "very meaningful" - Japan PM

Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru said on August 18 that US President Donald Trump’s “efforts to bring peace to Ukraine are meaningful,” and that Japan will consider what it can do to provide Ukraine security guarantees, following a meeting between the US President and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru / The Japanese government is very interested in this issue. We believe that President Trump's active efforts to bring peace to Ukraine are extremely meaningful. At the same time, innocent people are being sacrificed every day, in both Ukraine and Russia. The most important thing is to achieve an early ceasefire and a fair peace agreement. Achieving that is an extremely difficult task that will take time. We will carefully consider what our country can and should do, both legally and in terms of capability, and fulfill our appropriate role.

Trump said during the meeting that the US will help provide Ukraine security guarantees, which he was previously unwilling to do.

Trump also said that he is pushing for a trilateral meeting between the US, Ukraine and Russia.
