Partially automated bus collides into tree during trial run in Tokyo suburbs

A partially automated bus operating on a trial basis collided into a tree in the Tokyo suburbs on August 29.

Tokyo police said they received a call at about 11:30 a.m. that the vehicle got into an accident on a road in the city of Hachioji.

The bus carrying 12 people was operating near Takao Station when it ran into a street tree and drove up on the sidewalk.

Police said two passengers sustained minor injuries.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government said it was testing the bus from August 23 to 31 as part of its efforts to utilize autonomous driving technology in town development.

The vehicle's autonomy is at Level 2, involving partial driving automation with the presence of a driver.

The police are investigating what caused the accident.
