Bear captured north of Tokyo, but schools remain closed as another bear may be loose

Since June 6, multiple bear sightings have been reported in Utsunomiya, the capital of Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m. on June 9, local hunting association members and others captured an adult male Asian black bear measuring about 1 meter in length on residential property.

Officials of the Utsunomiya municipal government held a press conference in the evening to explain how the bear was caught.

Because there have been witness reports that there were two bears, officials said another bear may still be loose in the area.

The officials said all municipal elementary and junior high schools will remain closed for the third straight day on June 10.

They added that online classes may be conducted at the discretion of each school.

The city will continue patrols and remain on high alert for the next three days or so.
