Police in Kanagawa Prefecture arrested a 19-year-old acquaintance believed to have met a 17-year-old female high school student shortly before her disappearance. 

According to investigative sources, her body was discovered near the Sagami River shortly after 2AM on June 11.

Authorities believe the victim is a 17-year-old high school student from neighboring Zama City.

The discovery came just hours after her family reported her missing.

On the night of June 10, a relative contacted police after the teenager failed to return home.

She was subsequently listed as a missing person.

Based on the condition of the body, investigators believe the girl was the victim of a crime.

Investigators are proceeding with the possibility of murder in mind as they work to determine exactly what happened.
