Car falls downstairs into supermarket from rooftop parking lot

S/ Supermarket customer / There was a thunder-like sound. It went bang, boom, with a high pitch.

A car in a rooftop parking lot crashed into a stairway leading to a supermarket downstairs and fell into the store in Kushiro in the northernmost Japanese prefecture of Hokkaido.

None of the customers or clerks in the store were injured in the accident which occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on October 7.

The 74-year-old male driver of the car was taken to a hospital. 

Officials said his injuries are not life-threatening.

Police said they believe the man likely stepped on the accelerator mistakenly when he intended to press the brake.

S/ NNN Reporter / The car has fallen into the store, and fragments are scattered about.

The vehicle landed in the produce section, where apples were being sold.

Police are investigating what caused the accident.
