SoftBank Group post record ¥5-trillion net profit on strong AI investments

SoftBank Group posted a record net profit for fiscal 2025 on May 13, with earnings surpassing 5 trillion yen for the first time.

According to the company’s consolidated financial results for the fiscal year ending March 2026, net income totaled 5.022 trillion yen, up 4.3 times from the previous year and marking a record high.

The multinational investment holding company said the figure represented the largest profit ever reported by a Japanese company.

The strong performance was driven by robust investment gains, particularly from the company’s Vision Fund, which focuses on AI-related firms. Total investment gains topped 7.2 trillion yen.

The company reported major returns from its investment in OpenAI, the U.S.-based developer of the generative AI chatbot ChatGPT.

Profits related to the investment in OpenAI exceeded 6.7 trillion yen.
