People remain on alert following the earthquake that struck northern Japan.

A few days have passed since the earthquake that registered an upper 6 on the Japanese seismic scale in Aomori Prefecture, and even in areas far from the disaster zone, people continue to prepare for possible earthquakes.

Within three seconds of the tremors beginning, a vast quantity of goods collapsed in one fell swoop.

The items continued to fall off the shelves, leaving the aisle full of products from the shelves.

This is security camera footage from a supermarket in Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture, taken during the earthquake.

Shop Staff: Since they're glass bottles, most of the fallen items broke. More than half of them fell off the shelf.

Shop Staff: It felt like it might have been stronger than the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.

A massive earthquake struck Hokkaido and the Tohoku region late in the evening on December 8.

A high of 6 upper on the Japanese Shindo seismic scale was recorded, and at least 52 people were injured across Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures.

Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture

December 10, 2025

Two days after the massive earthquake...

And Hachinohe was seeing sub-zero temperatures in the morning.

(7:00AM   -0.5°C)

With snow piled along the roadsides, 63 elementary and junior high schools in the city reopened, with only 2 remaining closed.

However, while filming at an elementary school in the city...

Teacher: So I jumped up and grabbed the TV.

Students: There’s an earthquake!

Students: It’s still shaking.

An earthquake occurred.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued “Off the Coast of Hokkaido and Sanriku Subsequent Earthquake Advisory,” warning that the possibility of a large-scale earthquake is relatively higher than usual, and calling for vigilance.

Amidst this situation, at a hardware store in the city...

Morijiri Yuki, NTV Reporter: Since the earthquake on the 8th, many space heaters that can be used during power outages like this have been selling well.

Battery-powered kerosene heaters and other cold-weather gear were selling well.

Customer: The cold weather is really tough, and when the power goes out, you can't use things like air conditioners either. That's why I think this is important.

By the way, this heater...

Customer: I think I’ll only use it during disasters. Like in case of a strong earthquake causes a power outage.

This customer said that they normally use their air conditioner, and that this heater will be dedicated for use during disasters.

Preparations for aftershocks are not limited to the disaster-stricken areas.

The epicenter of this earthquake was off the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture, but...

Subsequent Earthquake Advisory has been issued for 182 municipalities across seven prefectures from Hokkaido to the Kanto region.

Even in Choshi in Chiba Prefecture...

Announcement: Please be alert for the possibility of a major earthquake occurring in the near future.

Today, in Choshi...

Fisheries Company Staff: I was surprised to see this advisory information reaching as far as Choshi.

There's a reason why this fisheries company staffer says this...

Fisheries Company Staff: This place was also swept away by the tsunami from the Great East Japan Earthquake, so I'm scared the same thing could happen again.

The tsunami from the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 also struck here in Choshi.

Many ships and other vessels were damaged.

At this port...

Fisheries Company Staff: The tsunami came up this far.

NTV Reporter: Up to this height?

Fisheries Company Staff: Yes. We also rebuilt this from scratch.

Based on that experience...

Fisheries Company Staff: We wrote down what happened last time and shared it with all the employees.

Fisheries Company Staff: There's a manual that says if a tsunami comes, move your car to higher ground.

Preparations for aftershocks are also being observed across the Kanto region.
