KFC warns of product shortages, store closures following system failure at logistics subcontractor

Kentucky Fried Chicken Japan has announced that a system failure at a logistics company contracted to deliver its food ingredients could result in the suspension of some menu items and temporary store closures.

KFC said that although the ingredients themselves were available, their deliveries have been disrupted as the system went down at a Nichirei Group company to which KFC outsources logistics operations.

The logistics disruption affects about 90 percent of KFC’s products, including chicken and buns.

The disruption stems from a system failure caused by unauthorized access at Nichirei, Japan’s leading frozen food and cold-chain logistics company.

According to Nichirei, the system failure occurred at around 6:50 a.m. on July 13, affecting operations including the shipment of frozen foods.

The company said the scope of the system failure was limited to domestic operations.

But it added that there was currently no estimate for when the issue will be resolved, and investigations into the cause and other details were ongoing.
