More remains of war dead laid to rest at national cemetery
Crown Prince Fumihito of Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko, Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru and others attended a ceremony on May 26 to bury the remains of Japanese who died overseas during World War Two.
Participants including the families of the war dead offered flowers during the ceremony that was held at the Chidorigafuchi National Cemetery.
The remains of 368 people, recovered by the government from places such as Russia and Iwo Jima, were laid to rest.
Their identities could not be confirmed even through DNA analysis, and could not be returned to their families. The total number of remains in the Chidorigafuchi War Cemetery now stands at 371,008.
The number of war dead overseas is estimated to be 2.4 million. The collection of their remains has been carried out in various areas to this day.
