Tohoku Shinkansen makes emergency stop after train cars decouple
A Tohoku Shinkansen train made an emergency stop on the late morning of March 6 after its connection section detached while in motion.
The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. between Ueno and Omiya stations on the Hayabusa-Komachi service.
Approximately 650 passengers were on board, but no injuries were reported.
S/ Passenger: Right after leaving Ueno Station, I felt a sudden, strong brake and the train stopped. I hope it will resume operation soon.
East Japan Railway or JR East for short inspected the train and arranged alternative transportation for passengers.
Operations on the Tohoku, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines have been suspended but resumed by 3 p.m.
The railway company aannounced that the connected Shinkansen Hayabusa-Komachi service will be suspended for March 7 due to this incident.
A similar incident occurred last September when a manufacturing defect caused an unintended detachment. JR East had taken corrective measures in late October, but today’s occurrence has prompted further investigation
