1000+ quakes rattle islands in southwestern Japan in less than 2 weeks

More than 1,000 earthquakes have rattled southwestern Japan between June 21 and July 3.

Earthquakes with an intensity of 4 to 6 were observed on July 3. Two earthquakes with a seismic intensity of 5 on the scale ranging from 0 to 7 were also observed on July 2.

1,021 earthquakes with an intensity of 1 or higher have been observed from June 21 to July 3 as of 3:30PM.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said on July 2 that it cannot predict when the earthquakes will end or when the number will decrease.

It called on people to expect an earthquake with a seismic intensity of 5 as the region has observed a similar scale quake in the past.

The JMA has called on people to stay alert for falling rocks and landslides that may be caused by earthquakes and rain, as the seismic activity is still high.
