5 injured in festival fireworks mishap west of Tokyo

Fireworks were scattering near the ground, with white smoke rising from the tent.

According to police, part of a fireworks display malfunctioned at a festival being held at an elementary school in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture on October 11.

The fireworks fell towards some of the audience.

Witness: While watching the fireworks, one of them suddenly flew off in a strange direction, and an explosion occurred. There were people who looked as though they were in pain.

Five people sustained minor burns to their hands or feet, but none suffered life-threatening injuries.

The launch site was reportedly 30 to 40 meters away from the spectators, and police are investigating the details of the situation.
