Empress Emerita Michiko visits hospitalized Emperor Emeritus Akihito

Empress Emerita Michiko visited Emperor Emeritus Akihito at the University of Tokyo Hospital for approximately five and a half hours on May 7.

He was admitted to the hospital on May 6 for a thorough cardiac examination.

According to sources, the Emperor Emeritus underwent cardiac examinations both in the morning and afternoon of May 7.

Aides report that his examinations began after his admission on May 6, and he continued to undergo necessary tests to assess his heart throughout the 7th.

They say that he currently has no subjective symptoms and is resting calmly, also eating the hospital meals.

Empress Emerita Michiko reportedly shared lunch with him at the hospital and waited in a separate room while he underwent his examinations.

According to aides, the Empress Emerita is deeply concerned about her husband and strongly desires to be by his side to support him.

The 91-year-old Emperor Emeritus showed findings suggestive of possible myocardial ischemia during a routine health check in mid-April.

Ischemia occurs when blood flow to the heart muscle through the coronary arteries is insufficient.

Subsequent re-examinations indicated a high likelihood of this condition, leading to his hospitalization for further testing.

His stay in hospital is expected to last for several days.
