Quad foreign ministers agree on new energy security framework amid Middle East tensions

Foreign ministers from Japan, the United States, Australia, and India met for a Quad meeting in New Delhi, India on May 26.

Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu said the nations would work together to strengthen autonomy and resilience under the vision of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.

The four countries also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the FOIP framework and advancing cooperation.

In addition, they confirmed close coordination toward holding a Quad summit meeting, which was not held last year amid strained relations between India and the United States.

Amid China’s growing influence, the four nations agreed to strengthen supply chains through a new cooperation framework focused on critical minerals and energy security.

Following the Quad meeting, Motegi met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss the Indo-Pacific security environment, including issues related to China.

During the talks, the two sides reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
