Japan's Emperor and Empress visit Mongolia for the first time

Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako arrived in Mongolia on July 6.

After getting off their plane at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, the imperial couple tasted aaruul, a dairy product offered to them in silver bowls.

The Mongolian foreign minister welcomed the state guests who are scheduled for an eight-day stay.

This is the first time for a Japanese emperor to visit Mongolia.

The emperor and empress took a car to their hotel, where they were greeted by Japanese nationals living in the country and Mongolian people who have studied in Japan.

At a square in central Ulaanbaatar, a gigantic photo of the visiting couple has been put up.

A welcome ceremony is scheduled at the square on July 8.

On the second day of their visit on July 7, Emperor Naruhito visited the Chinggis Khaan National Museum in Ulaanbaatar by himself.

The museum opened in 2022 as a place where people can learn about Mongolia's history and culture.

The emperor looked at exhibits of excavated items that show the culture and life of ancient Mongolia and asked if Japan is cooperating in the archaeological investigations.

Empress Masako rested at the hotel to prepare for official events scheduled for the following day.

In addition to the welcome ceremony, the emperor and empress are set to meet with the Mongolian president and his wife and offer flowers at a memorial for Japanese nationals who died while detained in Mongolia after World War II.
