China intends to lift ban on Japanese seafood imports
The Chinese government announced on June 29 that it will resume Japanese seafood imports, citing that sea water analysis results showed no abnormalities.
China imposed a complete ban on Japanese seafood in August 2023 after Japan began releasing treated water from Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea.
The Japanese government said on May 30 that the agreements have been made upon the necessary conditions, but the Chinese side had yet to say when imports will resume.
However, China will continue the ban on imports from 10 prefectures, including Fukushima and Tokyo, that it had imposed since the nuclear disaster in 2011.
A source close to the Japanese government said that the China would not ease up their policies but has now made the movie to improve relations with Japan.
Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Koizumi Shinjiro commented on China lifting its ban.
S/ Korizumi Shinjiro, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries/ Resuming seafood exports, which are a significant export product of our country, to China is a huge milestone. We are operating with the government and private sector uniting for a speedy and smooth return to exporting. I believe it was an extremely difficult and severe two years. I would like to show appreciation and respect to everyone who worked hard to overcome this period in these conditions.
