World's largest nuclear power station starts sending power to Tokyo area
Tokyo Electric Power Company resumed power transmission from the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant to the Tokyo metropolitan area for the first time in about 14 years on February 16.
Reactor 6 at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant, which restarted on February 9, aims to begin full-scale commercial operation on March 18.
TEPCO confirmed on February 15 that the power generation turbine worked properly and started sending electricity to the Tokyo metropolitan area on February 16.
The plant, which is the largest nuclear generating station in the world by net electrical power according to Niigata Prefecture, is the first one to be restarted by TEPCO since the March 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.
Ahead of full-scale power generation and transmission scheduled for March, TEPCO plans to shut down the reactor once later in February for a thorough inspection of all equipment.
The operator will restart the reactor if no issues are found and gradually increase the power generation to maximum capacity.
