Convenience stores strategize rice product sales as costs continue to rise
FamilyMart announced on August 21 four types of collaboration onigiri or rice balls between popular onigiri restaurant Bongo and food manufacturer Kakiyasu Honten.
At FamilyMart, onigiri purchases remain among the top reasons to visit the convenience store as rice prices continue to soar.
The company is aiming to attract more customers and offer additional value through collaboration onigiris that are 50% larger than the store’s regular onigiris.
Meanwhile, Lawson has been promoting frozen onigiris that are 10 to 20 percent cheaper than room temperature onigiris.
Lawson is expanding this sale to about 70% of its stores nationwide.
Convenience store companies are applying various sales strategies on the mainstay rice balls amidst rising ingredient costs.
