Baseball great Oh, judo's Tani visit the late Nagashima's home to pay condolences
A car carrying the body of baseball legend Nagashima Shigeo left a hospital in Tokyo early on the afternoon of June 3.
The Yomiuri Giants’ lifetime honorary manager passed away at the hospital early in the morning due to pneumonia. He was 89 years old.
About 45 minutes later, the car arrived at the house where Nagashima resided.
Nagashima's daughter Mina, a sportscaster, and son Kazushige, a TV personality and former professional baseball player, accompanied their father.
His coffin was carried into the house.
Shortly afterward, baseball great Oh Sadaharu, chairman of the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, paid a condolence call.
Oh and Nagashima were teammates on the Giants during the ball club's golden years, including winning nine consecutive Central League championships in the 1960s and 1970s.
The two sluggers were nicknamed "ON cannons" for their illustrious batting performances.
Oh left after about 10 minutes.
Well wishers sent flowers to the house.
Other visitors included five-time Olympic medal-winning judo wrestler Tani Ryoko and her husband Tani Yoshitomo, who played for the Giants.
The couple were on close terms with Nagashima, who served as honorary lifetime manager of the baseball team after retiring as manager in 2001.
