Japanese space venture company ispace fails second moon landing attempt

S/ Hakamada Takeshi/ After we lost connection with the lander, we attempted to reboot the lander, but we could not reestablish communications.

The Japanese space venture company ispace was scheduled to land its lander Resilience on the moon on June 6 at 4:17AM.

However, ispace stopped receiving instrument data during the landing sequence and did not receive data that would have confirmed a successful landing.

According to the space company, the lander likely crashed into the moon’s surface after a delay in altitude measurement prevented the lander from decelerating to the necessary speed.

ispace CEO Hakamada Takeshi said the company will immediately analyze instrument data and work to find the cause.

ispace has previously attempted a moon landing on April 26, 2023, which failed right before landing due to altitude miscalculation.

A successful landing would have made ispace the first private company outside of the US to land on the moon.
