Bear escapes from enclosure at zoo in northern Japan

This footage of a bear was captured on November 21 at Omoriyama Zoo in the city of Akita.

It is moving about energetically, even placing its front paws on a tree.

While it looks like a wild bear, it’s actually a bear kept by the zoo that had escaped from its enclosure and was wandering around the zoo grounds.

The bear that escaped is a female Asian black bear named Ruby.

At around 1:30PM on November 21, a cleaner at the zoo discovered it near the giraffe enclosure.

At 7:00PM, a veterinarian captured the bear using a tranquilizer, and Ruby was returned to the bear enclosure.

During the incident, about 10 visitors to the zoo were evacuated, but no injuries have been reported.

The zoo closed its doors until further notice on November 22 to investigate how the bear escaped.
