Japan’s Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko arrived at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport on the outskirts of the Paraguayan capital Asuncion on the morning of August 19.

The imperial couple took about 24 hours to travel from Japan to Paraguay via the United States on a Japanese government plane.

They were welcomed at the airport by Paraguayan Foreign Minister Ruben Ramirez.

The official visit marks the 90th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Paraguay.

Crown Prince Fumihito of Akishino is visiting the South American country for the first time in 20 years, while this is Crown Princess Kiko’s first-ever visit.

Upon arrival, Kiko wore a white hat decorated with a pink lapacho flower ornament made in the traditional Paraguayan lacework style known as Nanduti.

During their stay through August 24, the couple is scheduled to meet with Paraguayan President Santiago Pena, attend a ceremony marking the 90th anniversary of Japanese immigration, and meet with Japanese immigrants and people of Japanese descent.
