Legendary sushi chef to turn 100YO

Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko visited Ginza’s renowned sushi restaurant Sukiyabashi Jiro on September 18 to give the founder Ono Jiro commemorative gifts ahead of his 100th birthday.

Ono made sushi for then-US President Barack Obama when he visited the store with late Prime Minister Abe Shinzo in 2014.
The legendary chef was recognized as the "Oldest head chef of a three Michelin star restaurant" by the Guinness World Records at age 93. Ono furthermore has made an appearance in American documentary “Jiro Dreams of Sushi.”
Ono, who will turn 100 years old on October 27, will be one of the 4,380 residents in Tokyo turning 100 in fiscal 2025.
