Nissan factory shutdown shocks workers and locals

Nissan employees and locals living near factories that were announced to shut down say they are “concerned” over the news.

The automobile company has announced the partial closure of 17 plants around the world, and the Oppama Plant in Kanagawa Prefecture is said to be one of the candidates.

Nissan employee / Yesterday's news made everyone uneasy. We were given an explanation today, and I’m not satisfied, and I'm just wondering if everything will be okay.

Local restaurants also voiced their concerns.

Izakaya worker / About 20-30% of our customers are Nissan employees, and they come in groups. If we were to lose that, it would affect the sales of the restaurant. We would miss them too.

Nissan workers often visit this cake store as well. It has supported the auto manufacturer's baseball team members with discounts and special decorations.

Patisserie Hada owner Hada Masaya / We have a good relationship with each other and have built the city, so we will miss them.  If Nissan thrives, I think the town will become more vibrant.

Nissan has said that there is nothing that could be disclosed about the plant closure or integration at this time.
