But it reportedly escaped outside the factory through a window on the night of June 3.
At the time, the window was said to have been locked.
S/ Fukushima City official / The window has sliding doors, and the lock is flipped down, so the bear likely opened the window by itself.
City officials believe the bear unlocked the window and broke through the screen.
The mayor also commented on the matter.
S/ Baba Yuki, Fukushima Mayor / The bear even showed behavior such as drinking water by opening a faucet. It appears to be an extremely intelligent bear.
The bear slipped past a capture trap set up in the factory. Its whereabouts remain unknown.
The city launched an emergency hunting operation and successfully hit the bear with a tranquilizer dart.
S/ Fukushima City official / The anesthetic drug remains inside the injector. What appears to be the bear's fur is stuck to it. It hit the bear, but for some reason, the drug could not be injected.
The city is working with the police and others to urge people to remain on high alert for the bear.
