Over 270 cars damaged in flooded underground parking lot in Yokkaichi, central Japan

An underground parking lot in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, got flooded on September 12 as record-setting torrential rain poured on central Japan.

S/ NNN Reporter / Four days after the flooding occurred, drainage work on the second basement level is being conducted today.

Officials of the transport ministry's regional office for rivers and highways said work to drain the first basement floor was completed on September 14.

On September 16, they worked on the second basement floor that had been completely submerged up to the ceiling.

S/ Chubu Regional Development Bureau official / The cars were unfortunately covered with a lot of mud. They likely floated around and moved to different places.

Over 270 vehicles have been found to be damaged and stranded on the two underground floors.

Officials confirmed that there were 160 cars on the first basement level and 114 on the second basement level.
