Magnitude 5.0-earthquake rattles Japan

The Japan Meteorological Agency urged people to remain vigilant for earthquakes of similar magnitude for about a week, after an earthquake measuring lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale struck the Kanto region shortly after 10:00AM on April 1.  

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake occurred at around 10:06AM with its epicenter in southern Ibaraki Prefecture.

The magnitude was estimated at 5.0, and the depth of the hypocenter was 48 kilometers. There is no tsunami concern.

A quake measuring lower 5 on Japan's seismic intensity scale was observed in the city of Mooka in Tochigi Prefecture. Quakes measuring 4 on the country’s seismic intensity scale were recorded across a wide area including Ibaraki, Tochigi, Saitama, Chiba, and Fukushima prefectures.

According to the Mooka Police Station in Mooka City, where a seismic intensity of 5-lower was recorded, no injuries or damage to homes have been confirmed so far.

The Mooka Railway, which runs through Moka City and other areas, suspended operations on some sections.

According to East Japan Railway, the Tohoku Shinkansen temporarily suspended operations but resumed service after about 10 minutes. There was no impact on regional lines.
