One died and 453 people were transported by ambulance due to heatstroke in Tokyo on July 22, as the capital endured three consecutive days of extreme heat.

The number was the highest since the current reporting system was introduced.

A woman in her 70s who collapsed while tending her garden at her home died from heat illness. Three people were in critical condition, and 14 others were in serious condition.

Officials also reported that five heatstroke-related deaths have been confirmed within Tokyo's 23 wards on July 21.

In Saitama Prefecture, 178 people had been transported to hospitals with suspected heatstroke by 4PM on July 22. Twelve of them were reported to be in serious condition.

In Kanagawa Prefecture, 79 people had been transported to hospitals with suspected heatstroke by 3PM, including three in serious condition.

The number of heatstroke ambulance transports in both Saitama and Kanagawa marked the highest weekday totals recorded this year.
