Japan selects first female prime minister in constitutional history
Liberal Democratic Party head Takaichi Sanae was elected as the 104th Prime Minister of Japan, making it the first woman in the country’s constitutional history to hold the position.
In the prime ministerial nomination election, Takaichi secured a majority in the first vote held in the plenary session of the House of Representatives.
The ruling LDP members, its coalition partner Japan Innovation Party members, and several independent lawmakers are believed to have voted for Takaichi.
Takaichi is set to form her new cabinet later in the evening.
