Safety agency warns of gas stove fire spreading to clothing during winter cooking
This video reenacts a situation in which fire on a gas stove spreads to clothing.
When the clothing goes near the stove, it catches fire that eventually engulfs the entire garment.
Flames from a gas stove extend to areas that are not visible, making it possible for ignition to occur even when users think they are at a safe distance from them.
Officials also warn that fire can spread instantly on old clothing with loose surface fibers.
Organizations such as the government-affiliated National Institute of Technology and Evaluation are urging people to keep sufficient distance from stove flames, noting that wearing multiple layers of clothing during winter could make it difficult to notice when fabric catches fire.
