Teen arrested for illegally accessing streaming service and canceling over 46,000 subscriptions

Tokyo police say they have arrested a 15-year-old high school student on suspicion of illegally accessing a video streaming service and obstructing the business of the operating company.

They said the boy breached Bandai Channel last year and fraudulently canceled about 46,800 subscription accounts.

Police believe the first-year high school student who lives in Tokorozawa, Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, committed the crime by creating his own hacking program.

He has admitted to the allegation and reportedly told investigators that he used ChatGPT to help complete the program and that he did not have any grudge against the company.

Bandai Channel is a subscription video on-demand streaming service that specializes in anime and "tokusatsu" special effects live-action shows.
