Japanese life expectancy ranks in top 10 in the world, women's dropping over last year
The average life expectancy of Japanese people for 2024 was 87.13 years for women and 81.09 years for men, according to Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.
Compared to 2023, women’s expectancy was 0.01 years less, while men remained the same.
In 2024, the number of deaths from COVID-19 decreased by about 2,000, and mortality rates from cancer and other causes had also declined.
However, mortality rates from senility and pneumonia increased over previous years.
According to the ministry, Japanese women have had the longest average life expectancy in the world for 40 consecutive years.
Japanese men were ranked as 6th in the world, after dropping from 5th in 2023.
