According to Kumamoto Prefecture, the death toll from the July 28 earthquake has risen to 38.

Aeon said that a male customer who was found unconscious on July 31 after being trapped under a collapsed ceiling at Aeon Mall Uki was confirmed dead at the hospital where he was taken.

In another case, a woman in her 70s who had been sleeping in her car died on July 30 from suspected heatstroke. 

When she was found, the car she was in was out of gas.

This is believed to be the first case of indirect disaster death from the earthquake.

On the same day, a woman in her 70s was found in cardiopulmonary arrest inside a car parked at her home in the town of Hikawa.

She may be the same person who was reported to have died of suspected heatstroke.

Meanwhile, a wake was held on August 2 for 22-year-old Otake Kurumi, who died in the explosion at Aeon Mall Kumamoto on July 28.

Otake worked at a variety goods shop inside the mall.

S/ Bereaved family / She was cheerful, sincere and responsible, the kind of person everyone liked. Honestly, I was lost for words.

After the earthquake, Otake evacuated outside but later returned to the store at the company’s instruction and was caught in the explosion.

S/ Bereaved family / She said she had to return to the store because the company told her to put the day’s sales money into the safe. Kurumi was a responsible person, so I think she went back because the company asked her to.

The president of the company she worked for attended the wake, acknowledged the company’s instruction and apologized to her family.

S/ Company president / I offer my deepest apologies to the bereaved family.

S/ Company’s sales manager / We asked her to put the sales money into the safe, if possible, if she can go in.

The company said it will thoroughly investigate the circumstances that led to the instruction.
