Rare shots of humpback whale jumping in waters off Shizuoka

A humpback whale was seen making jumps in waters off the city of Fuji in Shizuoka Prefecture on March 10.

Footage of the breaches was taken above waters near Tagonoura Port.

The whale repeatedly propelled itself out of the sea surface.

Humpback whales are widely distributed across the Pacific Ocean.

The Institute of Cetacean Research said the marine mammal spends the winter in warm waters around the islands of Okinawa and Hachijojima in southern Japan.

It said the whale captured on video likely migrated north as temperatures rose.
