Close to a million spectators gather amid heatwave for one of Tokyos biggest fireworks festivals
S/ Kasuya Mayu, NTV Reporter/ It’s roughly four hours before the fireworks begin, but many people have started to gather.
Around 930,000 spectators gathered on July 26 for the 48th Sumida River Fireworks Festival, one of the largest fireworks festivals in Tokyo.
People were seen in yukatas, or light summer traditional wear, hours before the fireworks taking photos and saving seats.
S/ Visitor/ I come almost every year. We brought a cooling spray to combat the heat. I’m looking forward to it!
Central Tokyo reached a high of 35.5 degrees Celsius, or 96 Fahrenheit, during the day.
Organizers called upon visitors to take heat stroke prevention measures through social media and other means.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police closed roads around the venue starting 6PM to avoid accidents.
From 7PM, about 20,000 fireworks lit the sky above Tokyo’s Sumida River.
The heat from the day had subsided by the time the fireworks went up as spectators seemed to enjoy the summer night.

The police coordinated the strictest security measures for a city fireworks festival.

Police spoke on speakers to keep the crowd moving without stopping on bridges to prevent people from falling.
They also made announcements in English to manage the crowd.
