Early morning bear sighting captured on camera

At popular hiking spot Mt. Oyama in Kanagawa Prefecture, south of Tokyo, a surveillance camera has captured footage of a Japanese black bear near a cable car station.

Shortly before 6:30AM on August 27, the camera captured the bear along the Oyama Koma approach, about 100 meters from the ticket gate of the Oyama Cable Car station.

Earlier this month on August 17, there was also a bear sighting at the same early morning hour, prompting local authorities to install surveillance cameras the following day.

Currently, there have not been any confirmed reports of bear attacks to tourists or local residents, nor reports of damage to crops.

According to Isehara city officials, bear sightings near the cable car station previously were rare.

As there is significant foot traffic from hikers in the early morning hours, the city is urging caution and advising that in the unlikely event of a bear encounter, avoid provoking them.
