Fireworks festival theft arrested for allegedly stealing backpack while crowd watched the sky
A theft allegedly occurred while 920,000 spectators had their eyes fixed on the sky during the Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival on July 25.
24-year-old Kagoshima Noriyuki, who was referred to prosecutors on July 27, is suspected of stealing a backpack containing a wallet and other belongings with a total value of approximately 40,000 yen on July 25.
According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, the victim had attended the fireworks festival with three friends.
When the fireworks began, she placed her backpack at her feet and started filming the display with her smartphone.
Police believe suspect Kagoshima approached from behind and stole the unattended backpack.
During questioning, Kagoshima reportedly admitted to the charges. He said that he came to Tokyo for fun but he ran out of money, so he stole the backpack.
