Reporter: How did it go with the Japanese sir?
Donald Trump, U.S. President: Well.
Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru met with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit to discuss tariffs.
While no overall agreement was reached in the talks, the ministers in charge agreed to accelerate the talks.
Looking ahead, Ishiba stressed that the automobile industry is a major national interest for Japan and that he will make his best efforts to protect it.
According to several government officials, Ishiba presented a package of measures during the meeting, including new investment measures.
The package sought to eliminate the trade deficit as demanded by the US, but the package failed to gain Trump’s final approval.
One government official noted that it was disappointing as they were hoping for an agreement based on Trump's decision.
Meanwhile, another negotiator said that the trust between the two has deepened, and that they are one step closer to an agreement.
