Man arrested after leaving 2 kids after highway crash

A vehicle fallen off on the expressway.

Photos from the scene show an overturned car with severe front-end damage. Nearby, the two children are seen sitting alone, with no adults in sight.

On June 1, a car fell about 10 meters from a bridge onto the Tomei Expressway in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture.

Inside the vehicle were a young brother and sister, both elementary school students. Miraculously, neither child was injured.

Witness: I saw two kids and their father get out of the car. It was a sister and her younger brother. The boy was crying, and she was trying to calm him down. I spoke to them, too, but they were already sitting safely on the roadside.

The witness also spoke about the driver.

Witness: The ‘father’ climbed up from the expressway. I expected him to explain the situation, but he walked away without assisting them or reporting the accident to police. When questioned, the man claimed, ‘I dozed off for a moment,’ before continuing to walk away.

The suspect reportedly told the children to stay where they were, but never returned to the scene.

On June 2, police arrested a 47-year-old man, who claims to be unemployed, on suspicion of unlicensed driving and other offenses.

Authorities confirmed that he is not related to the children by blood or marriage, but investigative sources say they are the children of his common-law partner.

According to witnesses, the man climbed up the embankment of the expressway while talking to someone on the phone and then continued walking north.

The driver, whose license was revoked over 10 years ago for traffic violations, was later found walking alone near a hotel parking lot about 1.5 kilometers from the crash site.

The home address he told to investigators is about 40 kilometers away from the accident site, with the car he was driving being registered under someone else’s name.

Police are now investigating why he fled the scene and the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
