Takaichi arrives in the US to meet with President Trump

Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae arrived in the United States on March 18 ahead of talks with Donald Trump, where the two are expected to discuss the Middle East crisis and responses to Iran.

The meeting follows Trump’s expression of dissatisfaction with U.S. allies for what he sees as insufficient cooperation in ensuring security in the Strait of Hormuz.

Takaichi has indicated she will tell Trump that Japan cannot act beyond its legal framework, particularly if asked to dispatch Japan Self-Defense Forces vessels to the strait.

She also told reporters before her departure that she hopes to discuss economic security in order to maximize Japan’s national interests.

The visit was initially intended to focus on strategy toward China ahead of Trump’s previously planned visit there, but the escalating situation in the Middle East has shifted priorities.

Takaichi emphasized that de-escalating tensions and ensuring peace and stability in the region are now the most pressing concerns.
