Japan launches disaster response agency to brace for major catastrophes
The Japanese government launched the National Disaster Management Agency on November 2.
The new organization will serve as the command center for disaster preparedness efforts and emergency response.
The agency is responsible for a comprehensive range of measures, from disaster prevention before emergencies occur to recovery and reconstruction following disasters.
It is in a position to urge other government organizations, prefectural governments and other entities to strengthen their measures.
The agency also plans to urge the public to secure at least one week’s worth of water and food supplies in preparation for future megaquakes and other major catastrophes.
With disasters occurring in various parts of Japan every year, the agency will be tested on whether it can fulfill its role as an effective center for disaster response.
